About Tom Munnecke

My background has been largely in the field of computer technology. I was one of the original software architects of the VA Vista and DoD Composite health care systems (CHCS). I've been active in the early days of the Personal Computers (meeting Bill Gates and Steve Jobs when they were first starting Micro-Soft and Apple Computers, the early development of email (I wrote one of the first SMTP servers in conjunction with Jon Postel) the World Wide Web (attended the innaugural meeting of the World Wide Web Consortium with Tim Berners-Lee). I held a number of Workshops as the Uplift Academy, and was a fellow at Stanford's Digital Vision Program, examining technology for less developed countries.

I live in San Diego, Ca. in a home with sufficient solar panels to power all my home electrical needs and my two EVs. I could cover the energy cost of the water I drink from the Carlsbad Desalination plant, if the energy monopoly would allow this.

For about a dozen years, I was fortunate to share birthday lunches with Sci Fi Writer Vernor Vinge, who coined the term "Technological Singularity." About half the time, I left these lunches elated at the future prospects of AI to address the problems of civilization, the other half depressed at what damage AI could do.

I've decided to focus on what the positive aspects AI can deliver to civilization. I'm working on a manuscript Loom of the Future.
